A lawsuit has been filed in the Meriwether County Superior Court against Meriwether County Sheriff Chuck Smith for Wrongful Death of the actions of a Deputy Sheriff.
On June 10, 2025, a lawsuit against Meriwether County Sheriff Chuck Smith was filed in the Superior Court in Meriwether County, Georgia. The suit alleges Sheriff Chuck Smith is responsible and has control over deputies and employees of the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office.
On April 2, 2024, at approximately 06:00 am, Deputy Norman Siefken, in a Meriwether County issued vehicle, was traveling west on GA-85 at a high rate of speed. The suit alleges that Deputy Siefken did not have any lights or sirens on and was speeding. Thus, the Deputy struck another vehicle and killing the driver on his way to work.
The suit claims Wrongful Death and Negligence. According to Siefken’s POST record, he resigned from Meriwether on October 28, 2024. He is currently employed with the McDonough Police Department.
Sources have provided there are many other lawsuits that could be filed in future. Suits that allege mistreatment in the jail and the jails living conditions.
This is the same Sheriff that emailed District Attorney Herb Cranford on November 10, 2022, and fabricated that a citizen journalist was into child pornography. Thus, the DA should open an investigation into the matter.
