🍽️ School Lunch Angels Fire Up Hope with Weekend BBQ Fundraiser
Harris County, GA — The air was filled with the smell of barbecue and the spirit of giving as School Lunch Angels hosted their Weekend BBQ Fundraiser on October 17–18, 2025. The two-day event, held in partnership with Headquarters Nissan of Columbus, was more than just a cookout — it was a celebration of community, compassion, and commitment to ensuring that no child in Harris County goes hungry at school.
Headquarters Nissan generously pledged $100 for every vehicle sold during the event, with proceeds going directly to support School Lunch Angels’ mission of paying off student lunch debt and helping families in crisis. Dozens of community members stopped by to grab a plate, make a donation, and learn more about the organization’s impact across the county.
In total, more than 120 delicious BBQ plates were served — completely free of charge — to Nissan staff, customers, and visitors. The atmosphere was warm and festive, filled with smiles, gratitude, and a shared purpose.
“It’s not just about food — it’s about feeding hope,” said Carrie Cowles Assam, founder of School Lunch Angels. “When a child can sit down to eat without worrying about debt or embarrassment, that’s one less burden on their shoulders. That’s what this mission is all about.”
💛 What School Lunch Angels Does
Founded right here in Harris County, School Lunch Angels is a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating school lunch debt and supporting families facing hardship. Through community donations, business partnerships, and outreach, the group works closely with school counselors and the Harris County School Nutrition Department to identify and relieve outstanding lunch balances.
But their work doesn’t stop there. The organization also maintains a hardship assistance fund for families dealing with unexpected crises — such as medical emergencies, job loss, or house fires — ensuring that children continue to receive meals even when life takes a difficult turn.
Every dollar donated goes directly toward helping students in Harris County enjoy a nourishing, worry-free meal.
🔥 A Growing Movement of Community Kindness
Events like this BBQ highlight the power of neighbors helping neighbors. What started as a small grassroots effort has quickly grown into a countywide movement — uniting churches, civic groups, and local businesses around a single mission: no child should go hungry at school.
School Lunch Angels continues to build partnerships, raise awareness, and inspire others to step up for the next generation.
